Malus domestica 'White Icicle'

The White Icicle Columnar Apple is a unique and attractive variety of apple tree that is prized for its slender, upright growth habit and tasty fruit. As its name suggests, this apple tree grows in a columnar shape, with branches that are narrow and closely spaced, forming a column-like structure.

The tree's leaves are dark green and glossy, and they form a dense canopy that provides ample shade for the fruit.

The fruit produced by the White Icicle Columnar Apple is small to medium-sized, with a pale yellow-green skin that is sometimes flushed with red. The flesh is firm and crisp, with a sweet and slightly tart flavor that is similar to a traditional Granny Smith apple.

One of the main advantages of the White Icicle Columnar Apple tree is its compact size and vertical growth habit, which makes it an ideal choice for small gardens and tight spaces. The tree is also relatively low maintenance, requiring only moderate watering and occasional pruning to maintain its shape.

Overall, the White Icicle Columnar Apple is a unique and flavorful apple tree that is well-suited for home gardeners who are looking for a compact, easy-to-care-for fruit tree that produces a tasty and versatile fruit.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Does the White Icicle need another pollinator? If so, what are some good choices? Thank you.

White Icicle is a bloom group 2 (early-mid) season bloomer and will need another tree from bloom groups 1-3 to cross pollinate. Please refer to our Apple Growing Guide for a full pollination chart.

  • Hi, is it a scab resistant cultivar? Thanks

    Not specifically no

  • Does White Icicle make a good pollinator for Blushing Delight and Tangy Green?

White Icicle is a bloom group 2 and should pollinate those just fine.

  • What are the chill hours necessary for this variety?

    800+ chilling hours

  • can this grow in a container? and does it have any disease resistance?

Yes, they grow very well in larger containers and can remain in them their entire life. Columnar apples have moderately good general disease resistance, but are not bred specifically for disease resistance.

  • Is the white icicle columnar only for zone 4

It is hardy to zone 4, but requires 800+ chilling hours.

  • When does the White Icicle fruit mature and does it store well in a cellar?

Ripening time depends on your location. Here it ripens in late September.

White Icicle

Took the tree out of the box as soon as it arrived. Looked a little sad. Many of the leaves were yellow and fell off the next day. It is in the ground and we fed and watered it well. So we will see what happens. It does look a little better now, but we will see. Look forward to eating these.
