Arbutus x ‘Marina’

Arbutus 'Marina' impresses with its ever-changing look over the seasons. Flaking reddish-brown bark reveals cinnamon-colored layers. Proper pruning enhances this attractive feature. Pendulous clusters of pinkish-white, urn-shaped flowers appear in late summer and into fall, transforming to large, strawberry-like fruit that is yellow then reddens. Often in flower and fruit at the same time, this tree debuted at the European Horticultural Exposition of 1917 and was reintroduced in 1984 by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation. It is believed to have been brought from a tree in Victor Reiter's yard, the cutting originating from a tree planted in San Francisco in the early 1900s.
