Dwarf, Semi-Dwarf and Mini-Dwarf Rootstocks

Most of our apple trees are grafted on the dwarfing EMLA 26 rootstocks. We also offer many other semi dwarf and mini-dwarf rootstocks, please read about them below. To determine which rootstaoc is best, check the rootstock available after each varietal description in our
online catalog.

It is a superior choice for backyard growers and produces a tree that will grow to 8'-14' tall.

Use Raintree's search engine to locate apple rootstocks. For best results, enter the rootstock type as in EMLA26 (no spaces) and click on Search.

MINI-DWARFS
We offer 'mini-dwarf' apple trees grown on our special EMLA 27 or P 22 rootstocks. They are easily maintained at only four to six feet tall.

These
highly productive, compact Mini-Dwarfs are perfect to grow in a small backyard. You can space them as close as 5' apart. Or place the tree in a fifteen gallon pot on the patio. You can train them to branch low (at 1'-2') to maximize fruit production. They begin bearing in the second year and each tree can produce a half box of fruit a season. The tree is not a gimmick. It is used extensively in Europe in commercial apple orchards and the per acre yields exceed American yields. Caring for the mini-dwarfs is great project for kids. We offer 2'-4' grafted mini-dwarf trees. See each variety in our online catalog for price.

DWARF ROOTSTOCKS
Most of our apple trees are on the EMLA 26 rootstock. We call these dwarf trees because the rootstock allows the trees to grow to about 10 to 13 feet in height, depending on the variety grafted upon it. Allow about 10-15 feet of spacing between trees. Trees on EMLA rootstocks don't need to be staked, though staking apple trees is always a good idea. This rootstock does well on a wide variety of soils. Trees on EMLA rootstock are hardy in USDA Zones 4-9 and sometimes in zone 3 with the hardiest varieties like Honeycrisp and Wolf River.

SEMI DWARF ROOTSTOCKS
Most of our semi-dwarf trees are on EMLA 7 rootstock. These trees will grow from 12-16' in height and need at least that amount of spacing between trees. They are hardy in USDA Zones 4-9 and do well in a wide variety of soils. Our Combo Apples are on EMLA 106 which makes a slightly larger tree than the EMLA 7.
