MULBERRIES

(Morus) The Mulberry is a great ornamental tree, but don't plant them next to a patio because the fallen fruit will stain. Mulberry trees produce an abundance of delicious fruit.

USEFUL FACTS

POLLINATION:  Self fertile.

SUN OR SHADE:  Full sun.

PLANT SPACING:  Varies by variety but even the larger growers can be maintained at 15 feet in height.

HARVEST TIME:  July through September.

BEARING AGE:  3-4 years.

HOW TO GROW

SOIL REQUIREMENTS:  Like a well drained soil.

CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS:  Pruning, just thin out excess branches. To train the weeping mulberry, stake the trunk up to the height you want it to weep and remove any branches that grow lower on the trunk.

HOW TO USE

IN THE LANDSCAPE:  A beautiful specimen  tree but keep away from areas where fallen fruit will stain.

IN THE KITCHEN:  The berries are elongated, somewhat like blackberries. They can be used in recipes that call for blackberries. They have a wonderful chewy, almost coconut like aftertaste.
