Banana
We offer bananas that can be grown not only in the tropics, but in many areas of the U.S. The Basjoo is suprisingly hardy. The others are dwarf cultivars which can be grown in a pot. If you aren't in USDA Zones 9 or 10 you can grow these bananas outdoor in the summer and indoors in the winter. Bananas thrive in warm year around temperatures, a minimum of 70 or 75 degrees. They need alot of light. Make sure to repot them with a good potting soil mix. They will also thrive grown potted all year in a greenhouse.

S009 Bananas You Can Grow
By Stokes, 128 pages
For Northern and Southern home gardeners. Includes sections on cultivation, propagation, best cultivars for each site and growing in greenhouses and containers. Well written with color illustrations. full description
(Musa basjoo) This Japanese native is hardy to zero when mulched. It will grow to 15 feet tall (less than 10' in a large pot) and grace your northern yard with giant tropical looking banana stems and leaves. Though its seedy fruit is not palatable the flowers are showy. It needs sun, lots of summer water and lots of nitrogren for rapid growth. After the first fall frost, prune the stems to a foot high and use the leaves for mulch. By each May new growth will be spectacular. 1 gallon pot. full description
(Musa 'Double') This is a sport of the Dwarf Cavendish banana and is also known as 'Mahoi'. It will grow to about 7' tall in a large pot. Happy indoors with high light levels and temperatures 65° F or higher, it usually produces two large heads of sweet little bananas, sometimes three, beginning the second year. Dwarf Cavendish only produces one. Try in outdoors in Zones 9-10 and inside elsewhere. full description
(Musa 'Dwarf Red') Growing only 6' to 8' tall, this beautiful red skinned banana can bring the tropics to your home while the snow falls outdoors. It needs high light levels and temperatures 65°F or higher to do well, but will reward the thoughtful grower with delicious fruit that is almost black when ripe. full description
