One Gallon Pot (Vaccinium membranaceum) Its fruit is amongst the largest and best flavored of all the wild blueberries and is widely harvested for jams, beverages, pies and fresh eating. Plants grow up to 5' tall, though usually smaller and produce pink flowers and dark purple berries up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Declared the state fruit of Idaho, plants have beautiful scarlet fall color and grow throughout the Northwestern states at elevations above 2,000 feet. They are adapted to cool short seasons and high elevations. Grown from seed, plant at least two for pollination. Plants require a well drained soil, preferring one that is rich in peat. Fruiting requires sun though plants can grow in light shade and require shelter from strong winds. Established plants are extremely drought resistant. Not often domesticated and disliking root disturbance, plants are best grown in pots until being planted out carefully with the soil around the roots.
