Balled & Burlap Ornamentals - At our Morton, Washington Raintree Garden Center, we have a variety of beautiful ornamental shrubs and trees in tree bags that are too big and heavy to ship. These, too-large-to-ship Ornamentals CANNOT BE ORDERED AHEAD. We only have a few of these large beautiful specimens so we cannot guarantee which cultivars are available at any given time. Come to the nursery to see what is available; available only for pickup at our Garden Center. Bring a larger car, or pickup to bring them home. If you have an open pickup, please bring a tarp. Listed are the specimens we had in early March. The sooner you come to the nursery, the better the selection.


M051M A. menziesii 'Marina' (Too Large to Ship) 5 Gal

A beautiful evergreen with exfoliating bark, and leaves that are larger than the common Madrone. Pinkish flowers appear at the same time as the strawberry-like fruit from the previous season that is ripening. It will grow to about 30' x 30' or more in a well-drained, sandy, acidic soil with full sun. Introduced by Saratoga Horticultural Foundation in 1984.

M085L Carolina Allspice (Too Large to Ship)

(Calycanthus floridus) This beautiful bushy shrub grows to 8' tall. It has cinnamon colored flowers with a strong strawberry fragrance. The leaves are large, fragrant glossy green above and gray-green beneath. This rare bush thrives in an early American garden at Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. Hardy to -20 deg. F. It grows in sun or shade in a variety of soils. It is not the herb Allspice and is not edible.

H278M China Blue vine (Too Large to Ship) 5 Gal
(Holboellia coriacea sp.) This attractive flowering vine is in the akebia family. It is hardy to zero deg. F and evergreen in the Pacific NW and warmer climates. It is a fast grower with glossy dark green leaves and very fragrant cream colored flowers. It bears an attractive two inch long purple fruit. Self fertile. Native to central China.

K452L Ginkgo Male 'Saratoga' (Too Large to Ship)

A grafted male pollinizer for the female. Ginkgos grow to 50' tall. Plant a male and a female if you want to harvest the nuts. Symmetrical, upright form and wide branch angles. It prefers full sun and a good garden soil, but is tolerant of less than perfect conditions, including air pollution, and makes an excellent street tree.

It grows in the mountains of Tasmania and is hardy to 5 degrees F. It is famous for its fragrance and juvenile growth of attractive silver dollar leaves that are dried and used in flower arrangements. Many people grow the plant in a pot, pruning it back each winter to keep it as a beautiful small bush which produces the roundish foliage. If allowed to grow outdoors it call reach 30 feet or more.

The easiest of all to grow and the best choice for making a thick screen. It suffers less winter foliage dieback than any other variety and looks the best throughout the year. It is our most popular large bamboo. Among the hardiest species of the genus, surviving -20 deg. F. with little damage at maturity. Two inch diameter canes grow to 20-35 feet in height. Edible young shoots are of excellent quality.

M082L Paeonia suffruticosa (Too Large to Ship)

This variety grows to about 4-5' tall, producing an abundance of beautiful light pink flowers. (Our other tree peony Paeonia ludlowii grows to 8' tall.) It prefers rich, moist, well drained soils in partial or dappled sun. The flowers are more plentiful in full sun, but last longer with some shade. Since they can live for over 200 years, you can consider them a gardening legacy! These are called "tree" peonies because they produce long lived woody rather than herbaceous growth.

(Pseudolarix amabilis) A deciduous conifer with bluish- green needles, turning golden in the fall. It likes full sun and has tolerence to heavy clay soils though it prefers a well drained location. It can grow to 30' tall and wide.

It is a special feeling being in a tall graceful stand of Henon. The long sturdy culms are free of branches about half way up to the olive green swaying canopy. It grows to 40 feet or more and 3 inches or more in diameter. Its late spring shoot growth help make it cold hardy to minus 10 degrees F.

Arrow Bamboo. This useful and beautiful bamboo grows to 6'-18' feet tall and can be a rampant spreader! It has a very upright growth habit and makes a good hedge. Traditionally used to make arrows, baskets, and umbrella ribs. Has a large dark green leaf with yellow midrib.

(Eucalytus pauciflora "niphophila" Perhaps the hardiest of the Eucalyptus, it is found in Tasmania clinging to the snowy ridgetops. In good conditions it will grow to 35 feet or more but can be kept small through topping. It has pretty grey green elongated leaves and beautiful bark that is a patchwork of grey, green and cream colors, likened to python's skin!

(C. officianalis) Similar to Cornus mas. It blooms earlier, and has exfoliating gray, orange and brown bark. It is multi-stemmed, low-branching and provides dense shade. It can grow to as large as 15' tall and wide. Enjoy yellow blossoms in late winter followed by edible, bright-red fruits.

(Hovenia dulcis) Named for the sweet and tasty flower stems which resemble small, dark rasins, Japanese Raisin tree grows to be a small to medium size tree. Very attractive in the spring when it is covered with profuse fragrant white flowers, it is happy in full sun or partial shade. Grows to about 30' tall. Adaptable to most reasonably well-drained soils and bothered by no pests or diseases, Japanese Raisin Tree is hardy to minus 10 degrees Farenheit. These are in 2 gallon pots and are about 6-7' tall.
