Sugar Leaf

Stevia rebaudiana

This remarkable perennial herb contains a powerfully sweet, calorie free, sugar substitute called steviaside that is many times sweeter than sugar.

The steviaside is contained in the leaves, which besides being sweet has an anise-like taste that is quite nice.  The leaves can be used fresh as a flavoring and sweetener or can be dried and powdered for use in baked goods or for other processed foods.

Sugar leaf is not hardy below freezing, but it is easy to grow in pots and can be brought into a sunny window for the winter.
