It is a contorted red-leaf hazelnut with twisting stems, rich dark burgundy-purple leaves, burgundy colored catkins (male flowers), husks and nuts. 'Red Dragon' is the only contorted hazelnut with complete resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Regular contorted filberts are particularly susceptible. These trees are of moderate vigor and leaf size is medium, allowing the contorted growth to be visible in summer months. Growth habit is spreading rather than pendulous with moderate branching.
