(Vaccinium macrocarpon) You don’t need a bog to grow American cranberries. Just make a well drained bed. If you don’t have good drainage you can add peat or sand. Cranberries need a very acidic soil and need to be well watered, like their relatives the blueberries. If temperatures dip below 10° F., plants need a heavy mulch to protect next years fruiting wood. Plant one foot apart in rows two feet apart. The evergreen foliage has a reddish cast. The small profuse flowers are reddish pink. A beautiful, self-fertile ground cover. Zones 3-9.
